How to remove location from a photo
Every phone photo can carry the exact spot where it was taken, along with the phone model and the time. None of it is visible in the picture, but anyone with the original file can read it — and a photo taken at home points to your address.
Steps
- Open the photo in the remove-metadata tool to see what it contains.
- Download the clean copy: location, device and date are gone.
- Share the clean copy instead of the original.
- Turn off location for the camera if you do not need it.
Where the location leaks
The big social networks generally strip location from the photos they publish, and WhatsApp does too when a photo is sent as an image. But a photo sent as a document, attached to an email, shared through a cloud link or uploaded to a forum, a marketplace or an online store often arrives with its metadata intact.
That is how a product photo taken in a living room, or a picture of a car in the driveway, can give away where the seller lives.
How to see what a photo reveals
On an iPhone, open the photo and swipe up: if it has a location, a map appears. On most Android phones, Google Photos shows it the same way under the photo's details. On Windows, right-click the file, choose Properties and open the Details tab.
The remove-metadata tool shows everything at once — coordinates, device, date, serial number and author — without uploading the photo.
Removing it without losing quality
Most tools remove metadata by re-saving the image, which compresses it again. For JPG, PNG and WebP, the tool here removes only the metadata blocks and copies the image data byte for byte, so the photo is identical. The orientation is kept so portraits do not turn sideways.
On an iPhone you can also turn location off for a single share: in the share sheet, tap Options at the top and switch off Location. On Windows, the Details tab has a "Remove Properties and Personal Information" link.
Stop recording it in the first place
On an iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera and choose Never. On Android, open the camera app's settings and turn off the option usually called "Location tags" or "Save location". Photos you already took keep their location.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp remove the location from photos?
Generally yes, when the photo is sent as an image, because WhatsApp re-compresses it. A photo sent as a document keeps its original metadata.
Does removing EXIF data reduce quality?
Not with this tool for JPG, PNG and WebP: only the metadata is removed and the image is copied unchanged. HEIC photos are converted to high-quality JPG.
How do I stop my iPhone from saving location in photos?
Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera, then choose Never.
Is my photo uploaded to check it?
No. The photo is read and cleaned in your browser and never leaves your device.
