How to create a WhatsApp QR code
A WhatsApp QR code opens a chat with your number, with no need for the customer to save the contact or type anything. It can even fill in the first message, so you know where the customer came from.
Steps
- Enter your number with the country code.
- Write an optional first message, such as "Hi, I saw your menu".
- Generate the code and scan it to check that the right chat opens.
- Download and place it where customers will see it.
What the code contains
The code holds a wa.me link: wa.me followed by the number in international format, and the message, if any. Scanning it opens WhatsApp — or WhatsApp Web on a computer — in a chat with that number.
The number goes in with the country code and without the plus sign, spaces or dashes: for a US number, 1 followed by the area code and the number; for a Brazilian mobile, 55, the two-digit area code and the nine-digit number. The generator formats it for you.
Use the first message to your advantage
A pre-filled message saves the customer from wondering what to write, and tells you where they found you. Different messages on the menu, the flyer and the shop window show which one brings more conversations.
Where it works best
Menus, counters, packaging, business cards, flyers and vehicle signs. Test the printed version from the distance people will scan it, and remember that anyone who scans it sees your number — use a business number if you keep your personal one private.
Frequently asked questions
Does the WhatsApp QR code open the chat directly?
Yes. It opens a chat with your number, with the first message already typed if you added one. The customer only taps send.
Do I need the country code?
Yes. The link only works with the full international number, because it is opened on phones from anywhere.
Can the customer see my number?
Yes, the chat shows it. If you prefer to keep your personal number private, use a separate business number.
Does the code expire?
No. It keeps working as long as the number has WhatsApp.
